What Can and Can’t Go in a Rented Dumpster?

From Integrity Roll Off in Fredericksburg, VA

The short answer is that almost everything from a household or a job site can go in. Furniture, mattresses, appliances, carpet, drywall, lumber, cabinets, yard waste, shingles, general junk: all fine. We take mattresses, which surprises people, because plenty of haulers charge extra for them or refuse them outright.

What stays out

Five things can’t go in the dumpster, no exceptions, because the landfill won’t take them from us either:

  • Paint and stains
  • Fuel and oil
  • Tires
  • Medical waste
  • Appliances with Freon in them (fridges and freezers with the compressor still charged)

An appliance without Freon is fine. If you’re not sure whether something qualifies, text a photo of it to (540) 444-3867 and Charles will tell you yes or no before it goes in. That beats finding out at the landfill scale.

The concrete rule

Concrete, dirt, gravel, and brick go in the 10 yard dumpster only. It isn’t about the material, it’s about weight: a bigger dumpster loaded with concrete weighs more than the truck can safely lift. In the 10 yard, loaded level with the fill line, heavy material is no problem at all, and the 10 is cheap anyway at $325 for a day.

Weight, and what happens if you go over

Every rental includes disposal tonnage, 1 ton with the 10 yard and 2 tons with the 15 and 20. Household junk is bulky more than heavy, so most cleanouts never touch the limit. Roofing shingles and wet yard waste are the usual exceptions. Overage is $75 a ton, and customers bring this part up in reviews on their own: when a load weighs in heavy, Charles calls with the exact amount and asks before charging the card. Load honestly, keep everything level with the fill line, and the price stays the price.
